I really don’t have time for this today, but I was talking to a friend the other day about blogging (both of us were a little rusty) and when I got back on here I had so much fun looking through some of my old funny and semi-ridiculous posts that I HAD to write again.  I wish that I was a better artist, slam poet, costume designer, stunt coordinator, etc. but I have yet to develop “cool” self-expression skills and until I do this blog will continue to be a boring mess of scattered thoughts.

I’m no friendship expert, but I think that the best friends are the ones that are most different from you.

I have a friend… we’ll call her “Kelsey”. While we’re at it, lets give her a really cute last name too… How about “Darling”?

Kelsey and I are about as similar as MAC and NYC makeup brands (not NYX (for the uninitiated male go to this link (I think I’ll nest parentheses more often))).

She cleans the dishes, and I take too long to pull my clothes out of the laundry.

She’s five minutes early; I’m like the eagles that opportunely appear throughout the Lord of the Rings movies… just on time.

She subconsciously only buys earrings with triangle designs. I buy every cute pair of earrings I can find under $10.

She hates my major. I hate her job.

What in the world could we possibly have in common?

We both like cheesecake, we’re both really good about maintaining the TP supply in our respective bathrooms, and we both enjoy dating Ryan Gosling (although neither of us has ever tried it).

Do you Think I’m Power Hungry?

Today I did a little soul searching (inspired by Tinder) and I re-realized that I’m really attracted to men who motivated, intelligent, have masters degrees (+), and have accomplished interesting things. (I know that if Marie reads this her eyes are going to roll)

I’m not alone… I think that most women appreciate those types of things.

But as I was Tindering today I realized that there are only 2.5 things that I look for when I swipe.

1)    Is he motivated? (ie. already has a cool job, planning to pursue an interesting career, or in the process of getting a good education)

2)   Is he funny? (on Tinder the evidence would be on his headline…. which usually isn’t good evidence AT ALL. In real life you just feel it)

2.5)   Is he cute? (He might be top of the class at Harvard Medical School but if he isn’t at least a little bit cute… it’s a problem. If he’s funny though, I probably wont care how ugly he is)

I typed “vintage ugly man” into a google search and this is what showed up. Apparently the standard for beauty was much higher back in the day…

I feel a little bad about my preference because {in my mind} I’m always criticizing guys for making looks such an important part of their dating selection. Yet, I do the same thing with motivation/job potential.

Granted, I’m a pretty motivated individual so I feel slightly entitled to be with someone who matches my enthusiasm…. and yet in the end, I’m actually quite shallow.

One more time: I’M SUPER SHALLOW.

You Can Buy Happiness, but Not with Money

An investment in gratitude pays valuable dividends, especially when times are tough.

Many people today are struggling to make do with less. What’s the secret to finding happiness when you’re coping with loss? If we observe people who know how to be happy, we find that they make a point of being grateful for whatever they have. And it’s not related to how much material wealth you may or may not possess. A growing body of research has demonstrated that grateful people are happier than their less-grateful counterparts, regardless of their income level.

THE DETAILS: Gratitude has also been found to be a powerful antidote to depression. Martin Seligman, PhD, a pioneer in the positive psychology movement, and colleagues at University of Pennsylvania delivered gratitude instructions to 50 severely depressed visitors to a self-help website. They recommended that individuals take time each day to write down three things that went well that day, and why they thought so. Fifteen days later, 94 percent of the 50 individuals reported feeling significantly less depressed. Their scores on a widely used depression inventory dropped by 50 percent — equivalent to improvement seen with medication treatment or psychotherapy, although the latter interventions generally take longer to work. Individuals in a placebo-controlled group who wrote down three childhood memories each day did not experience an improvement in their depressive symptoms. More important, the effects for the group practicing gratitude lasted for a full 6 months. The researchers repeated the same study several months later with a different group of depressed Web users and obtained substantially the same results. Seligman’s group also found that writing in a gratitude journal had a mood-boosting effect for depressed patients in a 12-week therapy group, as well as for patients in individual therapy.

WHAT IT MEANS: Cultivating gratitude is a powerful way to overcome adversity and depression. By choosing to focus on your blessings, rather than ruminating on your disappointments and deficits, you nourish positive feelings about yourself, your life, and others. As an ongoing attitude, gratitude will help you cultivate happiness throughout your life. It is no accident that the individuals in Seligman’s study maintained their gains long after they completed the online intervention. Gratitude is habit-forming. The number of things you can be grateful for is infinite. As a happiness resource, gratitude is free and inexhaustible.

There are many ways you can weave gratitude into the fabric of your life:

  • Keep a gratitude journal. At the end of each day, write down three things you experienced that you feel grateful for. They could be as varied as the buds appearing on the trees in your yard and appreciation for the kindness extended to you by a stranger. As you chronicle the things you feel grateful for, make a point of not repeating any of the prior entries in your journal.
  • Write and deliver a gratitude letter to someone in your life whom you have not properly thanked for what they have given to you. You can deliver the letter in personor read it over the telephone. It’s a powerful experience, for you as well as for the person you’re thanking.
  • Say grace before each meal to express your thanks for the food you are about to eat.
    Use whatever language you’re comfortable with, whether religious, spiritual, or just an informal expression of gratitude for the meal.
  • Make a point of thanking anyone who serves you in any way — the cashier at the checkout counter, your child for clearing the dinner table, the tech-support person who helped you fix your computer.
  • Take gratitude breaks during the course of each day to simply appreciate the myriad blessings, large and small, that are present in your life.

8 Meaningful Ways to Help a Homeless Person

I’ve always felt that it is MY responsibility to take care of the poor and downtrodden in my community.  Although I donate to charitable organizations, I find the most satisfaction when I can give to others directly. honeless man

Whenever I see a homeless person around town I want to help, but I never do because I want to do something more meaningful than money. When I get holiday gifts, I HATE the money presents because although they’re useful, they’re SO GENERIC. They require absolutely no forethought. Thus, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I consulted my favorite internet forums and put together a list of meaningful ways to help the homeless.

1) Carry around granola bars.  You’ve probably heard this one before, but it’s actually a great way to solve one of the most pressing problems that homeless people have.  What could be more meaningful than giving food to a hungry person?

2) Gift Cards and Coupons. Often times, homeless people have a small amount of money to use for their most basic needs.  Giving a coupon can ease some of their financial burdens.  Giving a gift card is even be better. homeless

3) Rent a locker to store their valuables. It’s hard for homeless people to keep their most valuable possessions safe so one blog I read suggested that you pre-purchase a few months rent on a locker at a shelter or community center.

4) Extra blankets and sleep pads. Rather than giving them to a thrift store, put them in your car and wait for the opportunity to give them away yourself.

5) Be on the lookout for easy job opportunities. It’s hard for homeless people to find job opportunities.  One of the greatest ways you can help them is through referrals and networking. Networking has been proven to be the best way to get a job and that applies to homeless people too!

6) Clean clothes.  Same as bedding.

7) Save old hotel shampoo and conditioner bottles.  Small sizes are easily transportable which makes them a better option than large cumbersome bottles. Take your own bottle of shampoo on vacations and save the travel size bottles for others.

8) Donate bus tokens. It can be hard for homeless people to get around town quickly, bus tokens can help quite a bit. You can either purchase tokens on your own or coordinate with the local homeless shelter for help.

I was reading an article about a girl who died of bone cancer last week.  I don’t usually like inspirational stories about death because they make me sad but this girl intrigued me because she had an insanely cool bucket list.

Fly Geyser, Black Rock Desert, Nevada

Fly Geyser is not a natural phenomenon. It was created accidentally in 1964 from a geothermal test well inadequately capped. The scalding water has erupted from the well since then, leaving calcium carbonate deposits growing at the rate of several inches per year. The brilliant red and green coloring on the mounds is from thermophilic algae thriving in the extreme micro-climate of the geysers.  It’s not technically open to the public but who doesn’t like a little trespassing adventure?nevada

Bodie, California – Ghost Town

One of the most well-preserved ghost towns in America lies in the Rocky Mountains.  Bodie is unique because the homes are still furnished and the buildings are intact.  It’s almost like everyone int he town just stood up one day and walked out!
